15 Best PS4 Fighting Games of 2019 – Ultimate Guide

When it appears to hardcore societies, combat games have some of the most dedicated actors out there. The genre breeds all kinds of competition, and fortunately, the PlayStation 4, now almost six whole years into its life, is home to a very impressive selection of beat-’em-ups, from conventional 2D brawlers and 3D competitors to still anime-based signs.

There’s something for just about everyone, but what are the best fighting games on PS4? We’ve gathered together what we think are the top 15 titles on Sony’s system, taking into account polish, content, popularity, and the sheer strength and depth of their combat systems.

1. Dead or Alive 6 – PS4 & Xbox 360

Although Dead or Alive 6 does stumble over some dumb design decisions and a bloody awful story mode, it’s still a fun fighter that’s welcoming to players of all skill levels.

At its best, it’s a gorgeous looking brawler topped off with some seriously crunchy combos, and although it doesn’t quite replace Dead or Alive 5: Last Round as our favourite entry in the series, it’s still well worth a look if you’re on the market for a more recent 3D fighting game.

2. Gundam Versus – PS4

Definitely not in line with most of the other games on this list, Gundam Versus isn’t what you’d call a traditional beat-’em-up, but it’s got all the hallmarks of a great competitive experience.

Combining deadly melee combos with tense long-range shootouts, this is an arena brawler that supports teams of up to three players. A heavy emphasis on movement is what gives this title its depth, and a huge roster of playable mobile suits should give enthusiasts more than enough toys to play around with.

3. Dragon Ball XenoVerse 2 – Future Warrior – PS4 & Xbox 360

Part fighter and part role-playing game, Dragon Ball XenoVerse 2 has a lot to offer those looking for a meaty, in-depth Dragon Ball title. Assuming the role of your own custom character, you’re free to follow the title’s lengthy story or get stuck into a huge amount of side quests.

Co-op play also plays a part, and there are traditional online options for those looking for some competition. XenoVerse 2 is far from the most traditional fighting game on PS4, but it’s got a huge amount of content to chew through and a satisfying, highly customizable combat system.

4. Dead or Alive 5: Last Round

Look past the ridiculous season passes and the title’s potentially distracting obsession with the female form, and you’ll find a competent, fast, and fun fighting game in Dead or Alive 5: Last Round. A 3D brawler that’s relatively easy to pick up and play, it’s a great option for those who are trying to find their footing in the genre.

It’s also got a good amount of game modes to pick through and a large character roster. It may not be the most recent entry in the series, but we still think it’s the best Dead or Alive that money can buy.

5. The King of Fighters XIV

Sporting a massive character roster and some of the best team-based battles on the platform, The King of Fighters XIV is a well-crafted release with plenty of depth.

It may leave something to be desired in terms of presentation — even after its post-launch graphical overhaul — but it’s still well worth a look if you’re a fan of technical 2D brawlers. Experimenting with team composition and open-ended combos is the meat of this nicely executed title.

6. Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4

For our money one of the best-licensed anime fighters on PS4, Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 is the pinnacle of CyberConnect2’s long-running series. Oozing detail and polish, this is an incredibly enjoyable team-based brawler, and it’s stuffed with content.

Its story mode covers the ending act of Naruto Shippuden and its bombastic boss fights do the source material real justice. An overall fantastic and gorgeous package, even if its gigantic character roster has a fair few competitive balancing issues.

7. BlazBlue: Central Fiction

A lovely looking 2D fighter, BlazBlue: Central Fiction supposedly finishes off the series’ mental storyline. As expected of an Arc System Works title, the combo-based combat is tight, fast, and as complex as you want it to be.

Central Fiction refines a bunch of the franchise’s core mechanics, and with a large, varied character roster to wrap your head around, there’s plenty of room for experimentation and a lot of strategic depth to dig into. A real treat of a fighting game.

8. Mortal Kombat 11

Mortal Kombat’s never looked as good as this, and some intriguing gameplay twists add a welcome kick to this latest installment. While Mortal Kombat 11 does struggle with a few dodgy design choices in its various single-player modes, the, er, combat itself is still bloody good fun.

The ridiculous story mode is solid as well, and if you’re a fan of totally over the top violence, you won’t find more outrageous kills anywhere else.

9. SoulCalibur VI – Xbox One

A franchise that was long teetering on the edge of obscurity, Bandai Namco did a top job of bringing SoulCalibur back from the brink with SoulCalibur VI. The best entry since the beloved SoulCalibur II, this is a slick and satisfying weapon-based fighter.

Its single-player modes are extensive, and its character creation system gives it an often comical edge. Most importantly, though, SoulCalibur VI simply feels great to play, and the series’ trademark eight-way run system makes it easy to pick up.

10. Injustice 2 joke – Legendary Edition

Injustice 2 does not line up to the other huge hitters of the genre in phrases of gameplay plan, but it goes up for that by giving one of the best overall combat game packages on PS4. Incredibly polished and fit to burst with things to do, it’s an easy recommendation whether you’re a casual combatant or a veteran bruiser.

Of course, DC characters aren’t to everyone’s tastes, but the roster is brimming with personality and variety, and the effort that’s gone into making each fighter feel true to the source material is impressive.

11. Guilty Gear Xrd: Rev 2

The third and best iteration of Guilty Gear Xrd, Rev 2 is an utterly gorgeous fighting game that’s drowning in style and polish.

An open-ended combo system ensures a hefty dose of depth, and the crazy damage that just about every combatant is capable of dealing makes every duel a brilliantly intense affair. With one of the coolest character rosters in any current fighting game, Rev 2 is a delight to witness, explore, and obsess over.

12. Samurai Shodown

Expertly paced and incredibly tense, Samurai Shodown is a glorious love letter to more retro-feeling best ps4 fighting games.

One wrong move and you can say goodbye to a third of your health bar, and it’s this extreme level of risk versus reward that makes SNK’s latest an electric experience. Immensely rewarding, satisfying, and gripping in equal measure, there’s no other fighter quite like Samurai Shodown on PS4.

13. Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition

Street Fighter V has finally grown into a top-notch 2D fighting game thanks to Arcade Edition. Capcom knows much better than most how to make satisfyingly crunchy combat, and that’s the core of this polished, highly competitive release.

An ongoing hit with the hardcore community, the developer is still adding to the title with new fighters and stages. Street Fighter V is now in a much better state than it was when it first launched, standing strong as one of the PS4’s most accomplished beat-’em-ups.

14. Dragon Ball FighterZ – PS4 Back Cover

Dragon Ball Fighter excels in its ability to provide a hugely entertaining best ps4 fighting game for players of all skill levels. It’s brilliantly balanced in terms of accessibility, and it looks utterly stunning to boot.

What’s more, its dedication to Akira Toriyama’s source material is unmatched — it’s probably the best Dragon Ball adaptation that the medium has ever seen. Pile on a lengthy original story mode alongside a seriously robust online multiplayer offering, and you’ve got one of the very best brawlers on PS4 — whether you’re a fan of anime or not.

15. Tekken 7 Review – PS4 & Xbox One Scores REVEALED

Tekken 7 may be a little lacking in single-player content, but its glorious combat system and masterful fighting mechanics simply can’t be beaten. This is the best that Tekken has been since the legendary Tekken 3, serving up a super satisfying mix of crackling combos, deadly mix-ups, and brutal rage arts.

There are certainly more accessible titles on this list, but when it comes to the crunch, Tekken 7 is unmatched in its ability to bring the hype thanks to the sheer depth of its brawling and its expertly balanced roster. For sheer combat game perfection, it is not matched on PS4.
